" Dear Lourette My Drifters trip is already past and I am back in Switzerland, full of new impressions. Ursula and I really had a great time on that "24 days Cape Town via Vic Falls to Jo'burg" trip. It was not my first time in Africa and certainly will not be my last time. I don't know what fascinated me most, the endless desert, the living wildlilfe, the unforgettable Delta, all the lovely people we met... or just the amazing peacefull landscape and the beat of Africa. Drifters did a very good job, I will strongly recommend your tours to my clients. The tour was organised very well, and I felt safe and secure all the time (even while we were travelling through Zimbawe). The truck was very comfortable and it's amazing what all fits in in such a vehicle. I thought that the whole trip would be much more demanding. Even camping was always a pleasure, I never got fed up with putting up and taking down the tent, as it was so easy to handle. Of all the camps we stayed at I really loved the one in the Namib Desert (Desert Camp). That place looks to me like heaven. Erasmus did a very good job, as well. I really don't know how he managed to guide the whole trip by himself. It's a very hard job to be driver, cook, mom&dad, guide, entertainer, organiser, mechanic... all together at one time. He was always smiling and he really seems to love his job. He knows a lot about Africa and it was a pleasure to talk to him. The group sometimes was very demanding. I think each of those 17 people had their own idea of Africa and this trip and it was sometimes hard to understand all of them. We had 12 Norwegian girls on the group (all of a age around 20). In the beginning it was hard to become part of their group, as they tended to speak Norwegian all the times. Also the Canadian couple had their own idea of how it should be and what has to be fun. I knew travelling in a group would not be easy so I was not expecting too much and it did not bother me too much. Erasmus tried really hard to keep the group together and finally succeeded at the end. I would say I really made some new friends on that trip and had a lot of fun. What counts more than that? “I had a great tour. There was absolutely nothing to complain about except that South Africa does not believe in having locks on public toilets. I met some great people from all over the world, there was 8 of us and everyone had 2 seats for them selfs. There was a couple from Sweden, a nurse from Germany, an electrician from Canada, a Russian doctor from NZ, a pay role officer from Belgium and a very annoying teacher from Melbourne. Our guide was excellent and we also had a luck to have another guide who was in training. Drifters took really good care of us and I can say that is was a trip of a lifetime and I would definitely like to go back to South Africa.I would definitely recommend this particular tour and Drifters to anyone interested in conservation with a touch of luxury. Jan. 2008" Guide: Dawid de Wet Before I give you my impression of the adventure, you should know: if Germans don't complain that means everything was at its best. This trip for me was something special and it was the people that work for Drifters, manager and staff at the Inns and specially our guide Dawid who made this tour such an extraordinary experience. I liked the truck that offered a lot of space, panorama windows and "natural air conditioning". As we sped a lot of time in the truck it was good to have Dawid as driver. He always has his truck under full control. So even after a long day of driving we arrived always relaxed. If safety is the first important condition that makes you feel good, food is the second. We were very lucky to have Dawid cooking for us. As he is a excellent cook which offered a variety of tasty dinners... it was a pleasure to do the dishes. Of course a guide is not supposed only to be a truck driver or cook. Dawid and the people at the Inns told us a lot about nature, game, history, projects, people etc. They were always willing to show and tell. And they showed a very impressive enthusiasm for their work. Though our group was a very heterogenious group of individualists that was for sure not easy to handle, Dawid never lost his temper. He has a great ability to give a maximum of freedom without loosing anybody; giving a hand whenever it's really needed. He has a nice sense of humor and was a wonderful patient host to each member of the group. The open hearted way of being welcomed at the Drifters Inns was very nice. The staff was as special as the sceneries. Each showed us a different piece of South Africa. The accommodation situation was from "very comfortable" to "kind of exotic" (i.e. sleeping in a bee-hut). Although I must admit: Camping in a tend is not my favorite thing. In Germany I was told that South Africa was very dangerous an I got the impression even people in SA think life has to be controlled. South Africans seem to love fences and signs. Nevertheless I never had a feeling of danger. I always felt well protected. Maybe it was the way Dawit treated people around him, children or adult, black or white, woman or man, it was easy for us not to be afraid of the unknown. I want to say thank you very much for the lekker trip. South Africa is beautyful country I'm glad that I did this trip. I really liked it very much. or in German: "nothing to complain of" Best regards

"Hallo Sandra, I have been taking part in the 30 day overland tour from Johannesburg to Nairobi in June/July this year (Actually I have joined the group at the Vic Falls.) guided by Anthony. As we had not had the chance to fill out a questionnaire at the end of our tour I would like to let drifters know how excellent the tour has been. Africa has hit me. The nature, the vegetation and the animals we have seen on the trip were just amazing. I have seen one of the most beautiful sunsets ever. Once driving through the Luangwa Valley NP our Landrover has stopped right next to a male lion relaxing on the ground while the female lions and cubs were eating a dead elephant. The canoe tour on the zambezi river where we have been surrounded by hippos has also been a highlight. I will never ever forget all the wonderful, astonishing experiences we have made on the tour. I have absorbed it. Thanks also to Anthony. Although we have had some trouble with the truck he has always find a solution to every problem. He has put a lot of energy and patience in trying to get everything fixed and to minimize the inconvenience for the group. Even the night we were stuck close to the border of Tansania and Colin came to get us (thanks to him, too), we have had a good time, sitting on top of the truck looking to the stars and listening to him playing the guitar. Now being back in Cologne I have a hard time to adjust to everyday routine. I still miss the wideness, the wilderness, the campfire we have had every evening and this special feeling you have to explore yourself by traveling through Africa. The part of the tour which has had the most impact was Zimbabwe..the empty shops..the lack of basic things..the people starving. I gave away alot of clothing and food ..in fact all our group did.
You were right in that now I do plan to go back to Africa and maybe in the near future try another overland trip somewhere else maybe South America.

August 17, 2006 Dear Mr. Dott,
I have just returned from the 18 day overland safari from July 28 to August 14 with Octavus Momberg. What a spectacular trip and what a wonderful guide. It was so outstanding that I am taking the time to write you an email and hopefully you will read it.
I got to Drifters by just surfing the web. Little did I know that I fell into such a well respected and well run agency. Tauvis could only say nice things about the organization. He described how Drifters takes care of their game reserves and doesn’t overstock just to make sure tourist see the animals; he described how you and your staff take care of the land and the animals. Each inn and innkeeper was unique. They all praised Drifters for its fairness to the workers, and to Drifters’ efforts to expose the client to the surroundings while at the same time managing the land.. We often took the longer road so we could see what was inland not just on the highway. Your inns were further down the road so that we would get the experience. I for one appreciated that. When ever there was a little hitch i.e. the electricity going out, or the roads being blocked ( we were there the two weeks when the heavy rains and
storms hit the whole country – but not our trip ) Both Tauvis and the innkeepers didn’t grumble or complain but immediately went about finding solutions. I met many innkeepers and guides as we crossed paths with them. Each and everyone were friendly, socialable, and knowledgeable. Not one made any negative comments about the work, the system, and the clients. Hats off to you Mr. Dott for creating such a powerful and positive infrastructure.
And then there was Tauvis. I cannot say enough about this young man. Our group was difficult because we ranged in age from 20 to 63 and there were 6 different languages amongst us. Tauvis managed it all. I am sure you already know that his knowledge of the bush is amazing. There isn’t a rock he didn’t overturn to find the scorpion, or we did not pass a tree that he wasn’t able to identify its value. He seems to know the entire mind set of the elephant or that spider hanging in his web. He was just as enthusiastic as we were while looking for and then finding an animal during the game drives. Even when we weren’t on a game drive he would point out what ever animal we saw as we drove by and then describe its habits.
Tauvis never seemed to tire. First thing in the morning he was up and about getting things ready for the day. As soon as we stopped for the day he was up and out getting things ready for the evening meal. Food was delicious and plentiful. He took care of everything; nothing was ever missing or lacking. And he always gave us a variety – throwing in a fresh fruit salad, or a special kind of squash and vegetable. This young man was able to direct 14 people in a firm but yet friendly manner. It was especially difficult to get this group to bond because of the languages so we bonded through Tauvis and the experience. He handled it beautifully. Given our range of abilities he managed all the hikes so well. Up in Drackenburg he must have hiked double what we did for all the back and forth he walked - first to lead the way and then to go back make sure the slower people were doing ok.
We liked Tauvis so much as the guide that several of us have decided to go back to Drifters in two years on the 24 day drive through Namibia and Botswana eventually landing at Victoria Falls. And we want to go with Tauvis. I know he hasn’t left the country yet but hopefully you will give him that experience so that he can be available to us in the future. By moving him around he will only learn more about the land the animals and the people. In our opinion he would be ready to handle a new
trail/trip. Hopefully we can arrange the timing amongst ourselves in two years and then contact Drifters and try to get on a tour with Tauvis during the time that we are interested. He made the best of difficult situations. He is an amazing guide. I hope you have the opportunity to use this information for the company’s benefit as well as affording Tauvis the experience of seeing more of Africa.
